Phat in Ko Samet, Thailand

Vacation time!!! Destination: Ko Samet, an island just 2 hours south of Bangkok. 10 of us loaded into a van for a drive down to Banphe, where we would continue on a ferry. But first.. a little breakfast!

To me, travel = bad food, fast food, or no food. But in Thailand, food is AMAZING everywhere, even at a ferry pier that smells like dried squid.

samet-ferry
We started they day off right, with eggs served in the form of a super crispy omelette with crab meat, or khia jiao poo (yes, poo = crab). Next up, a super spicy warm salad of bean thread noodles, fresh seafood, chopped carrots, and watercress in fish sauce dressing.

samet-boat
Bellies full, we boarded the ferry for a 45 minute ride to Koh Samet. Some of us got seasick. :(

samet-beach
Finally, we reached the island, specifically, Ao Vongduern Beach. The beach is situated around a protected bay, so the waters are crystal clear and really calm. Ahhhh.

We stayed at a sweet little place Lulie’s friends booked for us – its called Vongduern Villa. I loved this place. It was on the quiet end of the beach, offered thai massage, and best of all – SERVED BOMB FOOD.

samet-padthai
Pretty much the moment we got there, we started filling our bellies. Nothing quite like some serious pad thai on the beach!

samet-roti
A short stroll along the water led us to dessert. I loved this sweet snack of freshly griddled roti wrapped around super ripe banana, then laced with condensed milk and sugar. MMMMMM. Notice a piece is missing… i was too tempted to wait to take a photo first! haha.

Ao Vongduern is awesome because although you are surrounded by a ton of restaurants, its not overdeveloped or overrun by tourists. (I only counted 3 ill-fitting speedos) Maybe we just got lucky because its the low season?

After an early morning of swimming, we were tempted by the smell of charcoal and grilled seafood. So we dried off and hit up the restaurant in the Seahorse Resort.

samet-fish
We had an amazing whole grilled fish, coated in rock salt and stuffed with lemongrass, ginger, and other aromatics. It was amazing. Super tender, simple, and incredibly flavorful! Just what i wanted.

samet-cockles
Steamed cockles and grilled pork neck helped round out the meal. Apparently grilled pork neck is not easy to find in the states, I guess because “neck” never sounds good on a menu? But man, it is so good. Amazingly tender.

Ahh Ko Samet, you were good to my belly. See you next time!

Phat in Beijing

bj-source
So a couple of weekends ago, we took an overnight train from Shanghai to Beijing to attend the opening of the Source flagship store. It was awesome. See more pix courtesy of Jenn Wong for Source here.

Having gotten off the 12 hour, food-less train at 7am, we were in desperate need of some nourishment. We wandered over to Gu Lou Lu, a bohemian street lined with traditional hutongs, and ended up at a small restaurant run by a mother-daughter team.

bj-gulou
They cooked us up some delicious grilled oysters served with ginger, garlic & green onions. We also enjoyed their specialty – a whole roasted fish garnished with lots of cilantro, chopped celery, peanuts, chilies, bean sprouts, and onions – all served in a metal pan over an open flame. I have no idea where this dish is from (Sichuan, maybe?), or whats its called, but it was DELICIOUS. Slightly spicy, served bubbling hot – exactly what we were looking for after a looong trip.

And of course – you can’t go to Beijing and not have Peking duck! The next day, armed with a recommendation from Adrian’s pops, we set off in search of some legit Peking duck. We found it at Quan Ju De, BJ’s second oldest Peking duck restaurant. Apparently the story goes that the founder of Quan Ju De paid off a cook from the imperial kitchen of the Tongzhi emperor to obtain the secret recipe. Mmmm, tastes… imperial.

Crispy, juicy, flavorful roasted duck sliced tableside!

Served with lots of steamed Chinese-style tortillas, green onions, and hoisin sauce. A Phat masterpiece by Allister Lee.

Quan Ju De serves up some real tasty & meaty duck.. but honestly I prefer the Cantonese version!

Another awesome thing about being up north in China is the abundance of hand-pulled noodles, or la mian. Lin Lin took us to this amazing noodle spot near Sanlitun on our last day. A real BJ treat.

The menu was really simple, consisting of thick or thin noodles (chewy, dense, filling) served in a hearty & flavorful broth with your choice of meat. Fancy it up with tableside garnishes of scallions, dried onion, and dried cilantro. Everyone had the beef rib special, and I went for beef tendon (left). Boy, I love tendon. And trust me – there is no good tendon in nyc!! The portions at Noodle Bar were huge and the atmosphere was nice and cozy.

Thank you so much to Chris & Jellymon for an amazing time in BJ! Can’t wait to come back!

Wednesday Night BBQ

This is how we do in the ‘Hai:
bbq-01
On the menu: grilled chicken, Ado-burgers, chili-soy-garlic marinated wings, potato salad, green salad, kabocha with garlic and butter, and of course – “casual conversation.”

bbq-02
Here’s a closeup of that Ado-burger.

I gotta say.. we get real nasty on the grill. With help from our friends, of course!

Shanghai got that stanky stanky

One of the pleasures of living in Asia is that it is perfectly normal to indulge in foods that emit smells likened to “rotting flesh” and “poo.”
stinky
durian & chou dofu? no big deal!

Ride or Die-m Sum

ride-or-diemsum
Two things I love: riding & dim sum. On this particular dim sum outing, we ordered so much that the steamers came in stacks of three! Ahh, love.
